During Round 12 of the VFL season, the Casey Demons celebrated the rich and proud history that has shaped the club into what it is today, hosting a special function dedicated to recognising the people, moments and milestones that have built the foundation of the football club.
The history of the Casey Demons stretches back more than 120 years to the formation of the Springvale Football Club in 1903. Established at the Springvale Hotel on the old bullock run to Dandenong, the club quickly became a cornerstone of the local community, building a reputation for success across multiple competitions.
From its early days in the Mulgrave Football Association, Springvale enjoyed a strong period of dominance, claiming premierships in 1920, 1921, 1930, 1932 and 1933. That success continued after World War II, with the club becoming a powerhouse of the Federal League throughout the 1960s and 1970s, regularly competing at the highest level and establishing a strong football culture.
In 1982, Springvale took the next step in its journey by joining the VFA, beginning a new chapter against some of Victoria’s strongest football clubs. The club quickly made its mark, winning the 1983 Second Division Premiership before progressing into First Division and building a reputation as a consistent finals contender.
The 1990s became one of the most successful eras in the club’s history. A strong focus on developing local talent helped create a dominant side, with Springvale claiming premierships in 1995 and 1996, before adding further flags in 1998 and 1999.
The 1996 Premiership remains one of the most iconic moments in the club’s history, with Springvale defeating Frankston in an unforgettable Grand Final at Optus Oval. Thirty years on from that triumph, the Casey Demons honoured that achievement by running out in the traditional Springvale Scorpions jumper, the famous guernsey worn by that premiership side.
As part of the celebration, the club welcomed back premiership players Graeme Yeats, Justin Woodman and Shane Burgmann, who reflected on their memories of that historic era and the legacy left behind by the players who wore the Scorpions jumper.
The function also celebrated another significant milestone in the club’s journey — the move to Casey Fields in 2006. After outgrowing its traditional Newcomen Road home, Springvale relocated to the newly developed Casey Fields precinct and became known as the Casey Scorpions, beginning a new chapter in Cranbourne East.
A special interview was held featuring Steve Harrison, Nigel Carmody and Daniel Rigg, who discussed the club’s first match at Casey Fields in 2006. The historic occasion saw Casey defeat Box Hill by 42 points, marking the beginning of a new home for the football club and an important moment in its evolution.
The day was hosted by Jason Bennett, who guided conversations with those who have played key roles in shaping the club’s history. The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the journey from Springvale to Casey, celebrating the people who have helped create the strong football identity that continues today.
From the early success of Springvale, to the Scorpions era, and now the Casey Demons, the club’s history remains built on tradition, community and a commitment to success.
