TWELVE months ago, Patrick Cross was focused on one thing: earning an opportunity.
Now, after a remarkable rise from Melbourne's VFL program to becoming a regular AFL contributor, the 23-year-old has been rewarded with a contract extension until the end of 2027 and an upgrade to the club's senior list.
For Cross, the new deal represents both recognition for the work that's gone into his journey and motivation for what comes next.
"I'm very proud and very grateful for the opportunity to get on the list over summer," Cross said.
"When the opportunity came to sign another contract, whether it was one year, two years or three years, it didn't really matter. I'm just happy to be here."
Cross joined Melbourne via the Supplemental Selection Period ahead of the 2026 season after a standout campaign with Casey in 2025.
While his progression to AFL football has been swift, Cross credits consistency as the biggest factor behind his development.
"Last year was probably my first full year of footy since I was 17 or 18," he said.
"Having that consistency gave me a lot of confidence. I knew if I put in the work over the off-season and an opportunity came, I'd be ready."
That preparation has paid dividends.
Cross has featured in eight AFL matches this season, kicking six goals and becoming a valuable member of Melbourne's forward line through his pressure, versatility and selfless approach.
Despite his early success, the forward believes there is plenty more improvement to come.
"I still feel like I'm a fair way off my best footy," he said.
"I've only really played one full season in the last four years, so having that continuity in my body and continuing to mature as a player has helped."
The contract extension also brings something every emerging player values - certainty.
After arriving at the club on a short-term opportunity, Cross now has the security to focus solely on his football and long-term development.
"Now I've got a bit more security and know I'm going to be here for longer than just this year," he said.
"It's a great opportunity for me to get to work and really try to elevate my game.
"Having that security means I can just go out there, play footy, come to training, get better, build relationships and be a bit more comfortable knowing I'm going to be around for more than a year."
