VERSATILE big man Sam Frost says he’s simply rapt to be playing at the moment, after his first season at Melbourne last year was ruined by a toe injury.
The former Giant has played in Melbourne’s opening two NAB Challenge wins and was critical in the last term against the Bulldogs at Craigieburn on Sunday, when he kicked the sealer to give his side a 12-point win over the Bulldogs.
Frost said he just “loved being back out there with the boys”, despite copping a corky in the first term, when he was in the ruck.
“It’s beautiful weather at the moment for playing footy, so I’m having a great time. I’ve still got a lot to improve on, but I’m just happy to be out there at the moment,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“I found my way into the game in the last quarter. I was a bit quiet early, but found my way around the contest a bit and I was lucky enough to get on the board.
“The second quarter gave us a lot of confidence that we were going to be able to run out the game.”
Frost said the team had a genuine belief it could come from behind and win the match in the final term.
“Last week, when we were down by a bit, the boys just kept positive and we were doing most things right,” he said.
“We finished off and rewarded ourselves this week, but coming off that win last week, we knew we were still in it.
“We were coming home with the breeze and we knew we were going to be able to score in the last quarter.”
Although recruited to the club as a key defender, Frost has played mostly as a forward/ruckman – a role he is genuinely enjoying.
“Whether I end up playing down back eventually we’ll see how we go, but I’m happy up forward at the moment, as I’m just learning a lot and off guys like Jesse Hogan, Jack Watts and Cam Pedersen,” he said.
“Wattsy has been playing some really good footy this year – he’s a very smart user of the ball and his contest work has improved a lot over the pre-season. He’s not only creating opportunities for himself, but other guys around him. He’s such a smart player.
“I’m really enjoying the forward line – there is a bit more freedom, as you’re not dictated by your opponent.”
