Summary
Melbourne has experienced a topsy-turvy 2011. The Demons have won three times, drawn in the opening round and lost three matches, putting them among the pack in ninth position. Still, it’s a reasonable result, considering the still developing Melbourne had a wooden spoon to its name just 30 matches ago. In many respects, the past two rounds have reflected Melbourne’s season - highlighted by some impressive wins and some disappointing losses. A brilliant 96-point win over Adelaide Crows in round seven was backed up with a frustrating 41-point loss to North Melbourne last round. But there are plenty of immediate challenges facing the Demons, including covering the loss of key personnel. The likes of Rohan Bail, Colin Garland, Jack Grimes, Mark Jamar, Tom Scully and Austin Wonaeamirri are sidelined through injury, along with Lynden Dunn, who is suspended. On the flipside, opportunities will be given to those on the cusp and emerging for the Demons. For the Saints, they too have their hurdles. The reigning back-to-back grand finalists have won just one match in 2011 and are desperate to turn their season around.

Players to watch
Melbourne: Nathan Jones

The hard-at-it midfielder has been one of Melbourne most consistent performers in recent weeks, averaging 26 disposals from his past three matches. Jones will also reach the three-figure milestone against this round - a fine achievement considering he has missed just four matches since debuting in round 17, 2006. His versatility is now a feature of his game.

St Kilda: Arryn Sippos
The second-gamer impressed with two goals last round, but his accurate kicking also helped set up two goals for skipper Nick Riewoldt early on against Hawthorn last weekend. Although the Hawks came from behind to defeat the Saints, the performance of the 18-year-old was very promising.

Match-up to watch
James Frawley v Nick Riewoldt
Expect the in-form Demon defender to line-up on the St Kilda skipper in what will be a fascinating duel. Frawley has been in fine form during the past two weeks - a fine effort considering his pre-season was interrupted with a torn pectoral muscle. Matthew Warnock could also spend time on brilliant Saint.

Most marks in 2011
Melbourne: James Frawley (43)

How’s stat?
The Demons have not defeated the Saints since the 2006 second elimination final - Melbourne’s most recent win in a final.

Memorable match
Second elimination final, 2006: Melbourne 13.12 (90) d St Kilda 10.12 (72), MCG
Melbourne’s won its first final since 2002. It was a fine result, considering St Kilda led from midway through the first quarter until well into the final term. David Neitz kicked four goals, including one of five Melbourne goals in the final term. The Saints managed just one in the last quarter. Brock McLean, Brad Green and Cameron Bruce were among Melbourne’s best.

What Dean Bailey says …
“We've got some guys that have been playing with good form in the VFL. It's going to be important for them to perform well. [We’ve got to] make sure the guys who play are certainly playing better as a team than we did [last round].”

Key Melbourne question
Can Melbourne break bounce back again from a disappointing defeat and also end its Etihad Stadium hoodoo?
