MELBOURNE’S poor clearances and tackles, James Frawley’s first goal in three years and the club’s unwanted record against GWS were just some of the stats to emerge from Melbourne’s 32-point loss to Greater Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium on Sunday … find out those and other key figures from round three in ‘By the numbers’
- The Giants easily won the clearances with 61. Dom Tyson won 10 of Melbourne’s 36 clearances.
- Tyson also had 19 contested possessions – a team-high and second in the match to GWS’ Adam Treloar (21).
- After three rounds, Nathan Jones is averaging 30 disposals per match and Dom Tyson 29 – they are both in the AFL’s top 10. Jones is fourth and Tyson is ninth.
- Giant Shane Mumford won a whopping 60 hit outs from GWS’ 79 hit outs. Melbourne won 37 in total, with Jake Spencer claiming 25.
- The Giants had 45 more tackles than Melbourne. The Giants had 115 to 70.
- James Frawley played in the unfamiliar position as a key forward. He kicked one goal and had a match-high seven inside 50s.
- Frawley’s final quarter goal was his first major since round 13, 2011 against Fremantle. The defender, who played up forward against the Giants, has now kicked four AFL goals from 121 matches. His other two goals came in round 17, 2010 against the Sydney Swans and round nine, 2009 against St Kilda.
- Forward-turned-defender Jeremy Howe impressed in his new role, winning a game-best eight rebounds. He also had 23 disposals – Melbourne’s second best for the match.
- Melbourne’s third quarter was its best for the season, when it booted 4.0 and won the term by a point. Jack Watts kicked two goals, with singles coming via Dean Kent and Lynden Dunn.
- Melbourne became the first team to lose to Greater Western Sydney twice. The Giants have also defeated Gold Coast (round seven, 2012), Port Adelaide (round 19, 2012) and Sydney Swans (round one, 2014).
