MELBOURNE forward Jake Melksham has announced his retirement from the AFL, hanging up the boots at the end of the 2026 AFL season after 17 years.

The 34-year-old has built a reputation for his energy and sharp goal sense, while also standing up as a leader throughout his time at Melbourne.

Melksham expressed his gratitude to the playing group, coaches, staff and Demon faithful for being part of his journey.

“I am so appreciative of everyone who has been involved in my journey,” Melksham said.

“I’d like to thank Melbourne for allowing me to come into the club each day and be unconditionally myself.

“To the fans, thank you for your unwavering support through the highs and lows. This club wouldn’t be where it is without you.

“I can’t wait to see what we can achieve over the next month.”

Chief of Football and Innovation Ned Guy praised Melksham for his leadership and longevity throughout his career.

“On behalf of the whole Melbourne Football Club, we thank Jake for his dedication to the red and blue over the last 10 years,” Guy said.

“He has been a great role model and provided valuable guidance to our younger players.

“To reach 250 games is an incredible effort, and for Jake to surpass this is a credit to his work ethic, determination and consistency.

“We wish Jake, Stacey and their family all the best for their next chapter.”

Melksham, who has played 254 career games and kicked 229 goals, enjoyed a late-career resurgence in 2025, producing a career-best season with 33 goals.

His 2025 campaign was highlighted by a career-high five-goal performance against North Melbourne in Round 18, 2025.

Melksham was later awarded the 2025 James McDonald Trophy – Trademark Player, which is presented to the player who best embodies the club’s values and standards both on and off the field.

Melksham joined Melbourne in 2016 after playing 114 games for Essendon. He has since surpassed his former side’s games tally, finishing his career with 140 games for the Demons and 254 AFL games overall.
