THE AFL has written to Melbourne seeking an explanation after several of its players took to Twitter to vent their frustration at the three-game ban handed to Jack Trengove by the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

Cale Morton, Ricky Petterd, Brad Green, Colin Sylvia, James Frawley, Luke Tapscott and Jack Watts all appeared on the social media site in the aftermath of the decision to express disbelief at the finding and support for Trengove.

Football operations general manager Adrian Anderson wrote to the club under AFL player rule 23.18.2, which covers criticism of a tribunal decision, and asked for a response by 12pm on Friday, May 13.

The rule states, in part, "No person subject to these rules shall make any unfair, unreasonable or excessive public criticism of a tribunal decision or of any tribunal member or any other matter touching upon or concerning the tribunal or a determination made by it".

Anderson has complete discretion in deciding whether the rule has been breached, with any sanctions levelled at the players and/or the club also at his discretion.

Trengove, 19, was cited by the match review panel for his tackle on Patrick Dangerfield during the third quarter of Sunday's match that saw the Adelaide player substituted out of the contest with concussion after hitting his head on the MCG turf.

The MRP ruled the tackle constituted negligent conduct, high impact and high contact for a total of 325 demerit points and a three-game suspension.

Trengove could have reduced that sanction to two matches with an early plea, but chose to contest the panel's finding, with his failure to overturn the MRP's finding leading to the public outcry.
