AT THE CONCLUSION of each round, the AFL coaches are asked to cast five votes, highlighting the best players afield in their game.

In a rare occurrence last weekend, Simon Goodwin and Leon Cameron were in agreeance, voting exactly the same way.

Steven May was considered the most dominant player in Melbourne’s 67-point win over the Giants, receiving 10 votes (five from each coach) for his strong defensive performance, which was accompanied by 24 disposals, eight intercept possessions and 447 metres gained.

Eight votes (both coaches’ four votes) went the way of Max Gawn who had 25 hit-outs, 21 disposals, five marks, four clearances and two goals, while Christian Petracca, who also slotted two majors, was the next best, taking the six votes for his 30 touches, 573 metres gained, 12 score involvements and five clearances.

Clayton Oliver was deemed worthy of four votes (two from each coach) after amassing 31 disposals, 15 contested possessions, eight clearances, seven score involvements and six tackles, while Charlie Spargo was the last man rewarded for his Saturday night outing, polling a total of two votes after having nine score involvements, a game-high eight inside 50s, and a career-high 22 disposals.

These Round 5 votes have taken Petracca's season tally to 26, seeing him climb to second on the overall leaderboard for the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year Award, five votes clear of Clayton Oliver who sits in equal seventh place.
