MELBOURNE’S Saturday night victory at the MCG was built largely on the back of its defence.

The Bombers, who had kicked the second-most goals in the league heading into Round 15, were restricted to just eight majors, handing the Dees an 11-point win.

And after amassing 18 intercept possessions between them, it’s safe to say high-profiled duo, Steven May and Jake Lever, are paying back every bit of faith the club has thrown their way.

“I love Rick (Lever),” May told Melbourne Media post-game.

“We have a funny relationship, but I think we’ve got some really good synergy going, understanding each other and that’s just flowed onto our game.

“I feel like we hardly jump into each other anymore – he understands my game, I understand his.

“But not just us two, the whole back six/seven are jelling really well.

“I think our strength and our maturity has come from when … we get challenged. The cool heads and the maturity to just back our system in to get us out of that.”

The Demons’ 12th win from their 14th match in 2021 leaves them outright top of the AFL ladder, but there is room for improvement in the final eight games of the home and away season.

“We’re nowhere near [our best form],” May said.

“We need to be a lot more efficient going forward.

“We need to stop giving the opposition opportunities to score against us.

“Even though we defended well, we don’t want to defend like that every week – it’s not sustainable.

“But in saying that, I’m proud of how we have set our season up.”
