IF THERE is one message that the Melbourne Football Club is sending females this year, it’s that football is not just for the boys. The Club took another step in supporting women in football  by launching an all girls Auskick program in conjunction with AFL Victoria.

Over 50 girls, aged 5 to 12 years, took part in the program, which was facilitated by state players from the Victorian Women’s Football League. Yesterday’s launch was designed to give the girls as a preview of the program before rolling it out through Victorian schools next year.

While most aspiring footballers might name Chris Judd as their idol, these girls have a different Judd in mind. Kara Donnellan - more commonly known as ‘Juddy’ - is an inspirational state player who earned her nickname from her lightning fast skills.

‘Juddy’ said, “It’s been awesome being a part of the first ever all girls Auskick program in Victoria. Today has been a huge success and we’ve got great feedback from the girls, so I have no doubt there is a place for this program in schools in the near future.  Thanks to the Melbourne Football Club and the AFL Victoria for continuing to support women in football - it’s programs like this that make the difference.”
