MELBOURNE veteran Tom McDonald has announced his retirement, with the 2026 campaign to be his last after 16 years in the red and blue.

The decorated premiership player has played 256 games, ranking eighth for the most games played in club history.

Known for his leadership, selfless spoils and versatility across both ends of the ground, McDonald was instrumental in the club’s drought breaking 2021 Premiership.

With Melbourne currently sitting sixth on the AFL ladder with three home-and-away games remaining, McDonald is determined to give his all to the program and finish on a high with a strong finals campaign.

McDonald thanked the players, staff, members and everyone involved throughout his career.

"I can't put into words how much this club has given me as both a player and a person," McDonald said.

"The care this club has shown me and my family over the last 16 years, and the opportunity I was given as a kid to fulfil my dream, is something I will cherish forever.

"I am proud to call myself a Melbourne person and I look forward to watching the boys in action as a fan in the future.

"The loyal fans, the coaches, the staff members and the players are the people who made my career what it was, and I am so grateful.

"I'm really excited for what this group can do over the back end of the season, and I'm prepared to give it my all before it's time for me to move on to my next chapter."

Melbourne’s Chief of Football and Innovation Ned Guy thanked McDonald for his service to the club and wished him all the best for the next chapter.

"Tom has been an excellent player, person and leader throughout his 16-year career," Guy said.

"Tom comes into the club every day with a strong drive and consistently put the team above himself. He is the definition of a selfless clubman, with the determination to mentor our younger players and help them succeed.

"Tom will always be welcomed with open arms within our four walls and is a highly respected figure.

"On behalf of everyone at the club, we thank Tom for everything he has given to Melbourne, and we wish Tom, his wife Ruby and their family all the best for the future."

McDonald compiled a decorated list of achievements throughout his career, including winning the club's Harold Ball Trophy (Best Young Player) in 2012 and finishing in the top five of the club's Best and Fairest on three occasions. He also earned the honour of a Melbourne Football Club Life Membership in 2020.

After beginning his career in defence, McDonald transitioned to the forward line, where he was the club's leading goalkicker in 2018 with 53 goals. He finishes his career with a total of 170 majors.

He later returned to the backline, where he solidified his place as an experienced leader.

McDonald was selected with Pick No. 53 in the 2010 National Draft and made his AFL debut in Round 23, 2011.
