JACK Watts is yet to have a breakout match, but his consistency is getting better each week, according to his coach Dean Bailey.

Watts was one of Melbourne’s best against Fremantle at the MCG on Sunday, winning 24 disposals and kicking a career-best three goals.

Bailey said the young forward was progressing well in recent times.

“I think Jack’s been reasonably consistent over the last period. I know he hasn’t had a breakout game as such, but what he’s been able to do is consistently lift his level of involvement in games, which is good,” he said.

“He certainly hasn’t had a breakout game, but you can see where he’s going. He’s a good decision-maker and for him to kick three was terrific.

“He’s just starting to get the continuity with the players around him and playing minutes of the game is really important for Jack.”

Meanwhile, Bailey said defender Colin Garland had jarred his ankle and could have played on if needed. Garland came off in the second half.

“He walked off, but he could've come back on,” he said.

“I walked past the doc and he said: ‘everything should be ok ‘.

“It’s more jarred than anything else, but the next 24 hours is the key with those sorts of things.”
