Harrington said the Demons now have several options with their two choices in the next few years.
“The compensatory picks are a valuable commodity because of the flexibility that they provide the club,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“Whether that’s a trade or whether that’s via the bidding system, which occurs in the next two years, they are valuable.
“And because they can be banked and used in future drafts, they become very powerful to any club that holds them.”
After Scully joined Greater Western Sydney on Monday, the AFL announced on Tuesday night that Melbourne would gain two opening round picks in the NAB AFL Draft.
The AFL determined that the loss of Scully fitted in the ‘first band’ of compensation. This was largely based on the size of Scully’s contract offered by GWS.
Melbourne’s first-round selection can be activated after the club’s first selection in any draft from 2012-15. The other mid first-round choice, when activated, will be used behind the clubs which missed that year’s finals.
