Neeld tells Todd to stick around
By Bruce Matthews

NEW Melbourne coach Mark Neeld has guaranteed a place on his team for caretaker Todd Viney. Neeld was at the Demons' headquarters at AAMI Park to start work in his role as the AFL's latest senior coach. "Todd did a great job in his role as interim coach. Yes, he will certainly be a big part of Melbourne moving forward," Neeld said on Channel 7. "I've spoken to him a couple of times and he's a very passionate Melbourne person. He's fantastic at his job and has a lot to offer." The former Collingwood assistant coach has talked to several players, but most are scattered around Australia and overseas on holidays. He will meet the players as a group for the first time at Melbourne's best and fairest count on Friday night.

Coaching puzzle falling into shape
By Greg Denham

NEXT year's AFL coaching landscape is slowly taking shape, but five clubs officially remain without a senior coach beyond this season following Mark Neeld's appointment at Melbourne on Saturday.  It is only a matter of time before preliminary finalist West Coast reappoints John Worsfold, while Carlton is expected this week to focus on the future of its out-of-contract coach Brett Ratten after the Blues were knocked out of the finals on Saturday night. Provided Mick Malthouse does not change his mind, Carlton is expected to offer Ratten a two-year contract extension following the Blues' most successful season since 2001. The Western Bulldogs appear certain to appoint Leon Cameron to take over from Rodney Eade and caretaker Paul Williams, but the timing of the appointment may hinge on the progression in the finals of Hawthorn, where Cameron is in his first year as assistant under Alastair Clarkson.
