The Casey Demons were unable to match Geelong on Saturday, with the Cats pulling away after half-time to claim the win at Casey Fields.
Casey produced some encouraging football across the opening two quarters, taking the game up to the Cats early. The Demons were strong around the contest and created plenty of opportunities, but costly turnovers in dangerous areas allowed Geelong to capitalise and build scoreboard pressure after the main break.
Despite the result, Casey finished on top in the clearance count as the midfield group battled hard throughout the afternoon. Zahri Burn and Bianca Lyne combined strongly in the ruck to give the Demons first use, while the midfield worked relentlessly to keep Casey in the contest.
Zoe Mitchell, Meg MacDonald and Tylah Burn led the way through the middle with outstanding individual performances.
Mitchell was prolific, finishing with 24 disposals, including an astonishing 20 contested possessions, while also collecting seven clearances in one of her strongest performances of the season.
In her first match as sole captain this year, Meg MacDonald once again led from the front. She gathered 18 disposals and laid 10 tackles, continually putting her body on the line and setting the standard with her attack on the contest.
Young midfielder Tylah Burn continued her impressive season with another standout display. She recorded 22 disposals, nine tackles and a game-high 10 clearances, while one of the highlights of the day came late in the opening quarter with a brilliant chase-down tackle that lifted her teammates.
Natalie Banjavcic-Mills also worked tirelessly on the wing, finishing with 17 disposals as she provided important run between attack and defence.
The Demons made a bright start on the scoreboard, with Kheely Cornwall clunking a strong mark in the goal square before converting Casey's opening major.
Stella Rogers added the Demons' second in the second term, reading the ball cleverly before soccering through a classy dribbling goal from the back of the pack.
While Casey generated further opportunities throughout the second half, they were unable to add another major, with Geelong taking advantage of its chances to steadily extend the margin.
The Demons' defence continued to fight under constant pressure, with Lily Snow (10), Michelle Podnecky (10) and Gemma Proy (9) leading both sides for intercept possessions. The trio repeatedly cut off Geelong attacks and looked to launch Casey back into transition despite the heavy workload.
Casey will now turn its attention to another significant challenge next weekend when it takes on Carlton. The Blues were impressive winners over the Demons earlier this season, and Casey will be eager to produce a stronger performance as it looks to respond against one of the competition's leading sides.
