The Casey Demons have gone down to the ladder-leading Geelong Cats at Casey Fields on Saturday afternoon.
The Demons knew the challenge ahead of them would be significant against the competition's benchmark side. Geelong made the most of its early opportunities to open up an advantage, but Casey responded impressively in the second term. The Demons lifted their intensity around the contest, moved the ball with greater purpose and matched the Cats for much of the quarter to remain within striking distance at the main break.
After half-time, however, the Cats showed why they sit on top of the ladder. Their ability to control possession, capitalise on turnover and sustain pressure around the ball saw them gradually pull away and take control of the contest.
Geelong's midfield depth proved difficult to contain despite another strong performance from ruckman Max Heath at the level. Heath battled tirelessly all afternoon, finishing with 20 disposals, six clearances, seven tackles and a game-high 32 hitouts.
The Demons' defence faced a difficult task, particularly with several key contributors elevated to the AFL side. Geelong's ball movement created plenty of challenges, forcing Casey's defenders to work hard throughout the contest.
Up forward, Luker Kentfield provided an early spark, kicking three first-half goals and looking dangerous whenever the ball entered the attacking 50. With Casey generating fewer inside-50 opportunities after the main break, his influence was naturally limited, but he continued to compete strongly.
Christian Salem produced another composed performance, collecting 21 disposals and a goal while using his experience and class to help drive the Demons forward.
Jake Melksham also started brightly, working high up the ground to become involved in transition. He finished with 16 disposals, seven marks and a goal, although he would have liked to capitalise further on the scoreboard after adding three behinds.
Aidan Johnson spent much of the afternoon in defence alongside Xavier Taylor, with the pair taking on the responsibility of key defensive posts. Under constant pressure, they stood tall, combining for 35 disposals, 13 marks and 12 intercept possessions as they worked hard to repel Geelong's repeated attacks.
Ricky Mentha continued his consistent form across half-back, finishing with 17 disposals and seven intercept possessions.
VFL-listed wingman Jarrod Gatt continued his strong season with 22 disposals and a classy set-shot goal. His run, speed and ability to use the ball offensively have become valuable assets for the Demons throughout the year.
Miller Bergman was again influential across half-back, gathering 24 disposals and providing plenty of drive with seven rebound 50s as he looked to generate attacking chains from defence.
Luis D'Angelo produced another hardworking midfield performance, applying relentless pressure around the contest to finish with eight tackles and five clearances.
Returning to the side, Toby Sinnema made an immediate impact with 16 disposals, three clearances and a goal, showing good intent around the contest and making the most of his opportunities.
While the result wasn't the one Casey was chasing, the match highlighted the level required to match the competition's best side. There were encouraging passages throughout the afternoon, particularly before half-time, but the Demons were ultimately unable to sustain that level against a polished Geelong outfit.
Casey will now turn its attention to next weekend when it travels north to take on the Gold Coast Suns, looking to respond with a strong performance in Queensland.
