The Casey Demons weren’t able to match it with a well-drilled Williamstown outfit for the full four quarters, falling to the Seagulls in challenging conditions at DSV Stadium.
The contest started as an arm wrestle, with both sides bringing intense pressure from the opening bounce. The opening quarter showcased the defensive intent of both teams, with 50 tackles combined highlighting the willingness of both sides to compete at every contest.
Casey’s strongest period came in the third quarter, where the Dees were able to lift their intensity around the contest, outscore Williamstown and generate repeat entries inside 50.
However, as the rain began to fall in the last quarter, Williamstown was able to adapt to the conditions and make the most of their opportunities, pulling away late in the game.
While the result didn’t go Casey’s way, the effort and competitiveness from the young Demons side couldn’t be questioned. The Dees showed plenty of positive signs throughout the afternoon, but will be looking to continue building their connection and ball movement, particularly finding ways to create more speed and flow when in possession.
Lily Snow led the way for Casey with a game-high 23 disposals, producing another impressive performance across defence and through the midfield. Her ability to read the game and provide an option around the ground was on display, as she also finished with six marks, equal-most for the match.
Meg Macdonald continued her strong run of form, overcoming an early knock to her nose to have a major impact throughout the contest. The midfielder collected 22 disposals, six tackles and four clearances, while consistently putting her body on the line and taking several strong contested marks.
Kasey Phillips continued to impress in the defensive half, showing her ability to win the ball back and provide stability for the Demons. Phillips recorded 19 disposals and eight intercept possessions, playing an important role in limiting Williamstown’s forward entries.
Shree Fairchild provided plenty of energy through the midfield, with her pressure around the contest standing out. She finished with 11 tackles and four clearances, helping drive Casey’s intensity throughout the match.
Anna Vrsecky provided Casey’s only goal of the afternoon, continuing to be a dangerous presence inside 50. Her strong marking ability and ability to create scoring opportunities remain a key feature of her game.
Zahri Burn continued her impressive development in the ruck, competing strongly against Williamstown’s two rucks. She finished the match with 30 hitouts and four tackles, continuing to provide a strong presence around the ground.
While the Demons will be disappointed they couldn’t maintain their momentum through the final quarter, there were still plenty of positives to take away from the performance. The young Casey side will continue to develop and refine their game as they prepare for another away challenge against Carlton in Round 7.
