The Casey Demons couldn’t get the job done against Williamstown at DSV Stadium, going down by 37 points in a game heavily influenced by the challenging conditions. The Seagulls were able to adapt to the familiar windy conditions and make the most of their opportunities throughout the afternoon.

The wind played a major role early, with Williamstown using it to their advantage as they started strongly. Casey found themselves under pressure around the contest, with the Seagulls’ dominant ruck combination giving them first use and allowing them to control territory in the opening term.

However, the Dees responded strongly in the second quarter. Their structure around the contest improved, and they were able to slow Williamstown’s momentum while creating opportunities of their own. Casey made use of the wind and fought their way back into the contest. Reducing the margin to just 10 points heading into half time.

Coming out after the main break, Casey started the third quarter with plenty of intent. They lifted their pressure around the ball, won more of the contest, and were able to make the most of their chances while kicking into the breeze. The Dees showed strong resilience to keep themselves in the game, but the final 10 minutes of the quarter proved costly.

Williamstown were able to break the game open, converting a number of high-quality chances from difficult positions and building a lead that Casey couldn’t recover from.

With the wind easing in the final term, the Dees were unable to close the gap despite continuing to compete. It was a game where Casey showed they could handle the difficult conditions, outscoring Williamstown during the quarters where they faced the disadvantage of the wind, but they were unable to restrict the Seagulls’ scoring when they had the advantage.

Latrelle Pickett was a standout performer for the Dees, producing a brilliant attacking display with four goals, each coming in impressive fashion. Along with his scoreboard impact, Pickett collected 21 disposals and continued to provide a dangerous presence inside forward 50, while also creating opportunities when pushing higher up the ground.

Bailey Laurie battled hard all afternoon, finishing with 25 disposals and a goal in a strong midfield performance. Henderson was also influential, repeatedly putting his body on the line and finishing with 22 touches and seven tackles. Both players lifted after quarter time and were able to impact the contest despite Williamstown’s dominance in the ruck contests.

Behind the ball, Changkuoth Jiath delivered a composed performance, providing stability and quality decision-making in defence. Alongside Ricky Mentha, who also impressed off half back, the pair helped generate attacking opportunities with 23 and 21 disposals respectively.

They combined with Miller Bergman (18 disposals) and Riley Bonner (29 disposals) to create some exciting passages of play, particularly when Casey had the wind behind them. The group was able to transition quickly from defence into attack, producing some impressive ball movement and creating scoring opportunities through fast and clean ball movement.

Aidan Johnson made his return from injury on managed minutes, completing the first half before being taken out of the game. He competed strongly in his time on the field, bringing the ball to ground and providing a strong presence inside forward 50. His impact was noticeable, with his presence missed after half time.

While the result didn’t go Casey’s way, there were plenty of positive signs throughout the afternoon. The Dees showed periods of strong football, resilience in difficult conditions, and the ability to challenge a quality Williamstown side.

Casey will now head into the bye with plenty to take away from the performance. The break will provide an opportunity to reset, recover, and continue working on their game before returning refreshed for the remainder of the season.
