LIKE many others, Jake Bowey grew up dreaming of playing AFL footy.

But that dream couldn’t possibly have gone to this script.

To start his career, Bowey hasn't lost a game, becoming the first player in the league’s history to win 15 matches from debut, without missing a single outing.

“It’s pretty amazing what I’ve been able to achieve,” he said on 3AW Football after Melbourne’s Round 8 win.

“But ultimately I’m just happy to be out there with the boys and getting the win.”

Back in the 1920s, Collingwood’s Albert Lauder won the first 18 games of his career, although those performances were not consecutive.

For Bowey to continue this history breaking run and become the most successful player from debut of all time, he requires victories against the Eagles, Kangas, Dockers and Swans across Melbourne's next four matches.

While 'Bowza' has naturally enjoyed the on-field success to date, he says the culture at the club is where it all begins.

“At training our spirit is always high, [we’re] always having a good laugh with each other,” he said.

“Then when we come out on the MCG in front of our fans – it’s pretty special.”

Bowey, who won a premiership in just his seventh match at senior level, has slotted in seamlessly to Melbourne’s defence.

The classy ball user plays years beyond his experience but says that’s largely due to the calibre of the players by his side.

Leaning on Jake Lever and Steven May in particular, Bowey has been able to find his feet quickly and have an impact week in, week out.

“Those blokes have heaps of experience,” he said.

“I’m only in my 15th game and their chat and talk out on the field is unreal.

“I’m pretty privileged to play with a couple of All-Australians, and everyone else in the side.”
