AARON Davey took to the MCG on 102 occasions for the Demons throughout his 10-year, 178-game AFL playing career.
During that time, he entertained the red and blue faithful with his flashy speed and silky skills, winning the club’s Best and Fairest Award in 2009.
On Monday morning, the boots were away as Davey returned to the hallowed turf, helping Melbourne make a significant announcement.
“It’s always great to come here and come back to a football club that helped shape and develop the person I am today,” he told Melbourne Media.
“To come here and MC such a unique day in the club’s history – 160 plus years and the oldest football club having one of the oldest cultures’ names … the Narrm Football Club – is truly amazing.
“I can only imagine this as one of the trail blazers and this will grow even bigger and better.
As Davey revealed, the Demons will be referred to as ‘Narrm’ – the Aboriginal name for Melbourne as spoken by the Woi Wurrung language – for the entirety of Sir Doug Nicholls Round in 2022.
And he sees it as the perfect fit.
“Melbourne Football Club, Narrm, it just goes together,” Davey said.
“It’s special.
“And no better place to launch it [than] the home of footy, the MCG.”
The Dees also unveiled their Indigenous guernsey at Monday morning’s event, designed by Wurundjeri/Dja Dja Wurrung artist, Ky-ya Nicholson Ward.
This jumper, along with the Demons’ new Narrm logo, will be displayed proudly across Rounds 10 and 11 of the home and away season, helping the club educate its supporters about Indigenous culture.
“You can never underestimate the power of sport,” Davey said.
“When you’re in Victoria, it’s a religion – football is a religion.
“This game has truly done so many things, whether it’s the Indigenous Round, Multi-Cultural Round, all these special, unique rounds.
“I’ll be sitting up in Cairns watching this and be truly sitting back starstruck.”
