MELBOURNE defender Joel Smith is set to undergo surgery after being subbed out of his side’s Round 7 victory over the Hawks.

In the third quarter of the Saturday night game at the MCG, Smith fractured a bone on the inside of his ankle which will see him sidelined for eight-to-10 weeks.

Taj Woewodin also joins the club’s injury list, ruled out for one match under the AFL’s Concussion Protocols.

Unfortunately, Michael Hibberd, who was on track to play for the Casey Demons last weekend, will have to wait a little longer for his return to footy after suffering a minor setback to his calf in the lead up to that game.

In positive news, Daniel Turner has recovered from his foot injury to re-join main training, which puts him in contention to play his first game of the season in the VFL on Sunday.

Melbourne will also receive a boost with Luke Jackson, Alex Neal-Bullen, Harry Petty, Kysaiah Pickett and Tom Sparrow all coming out of Health and Safety Protocols in time for Sunday’s clash with the Saints, making them available for selection.
