THIS Saturday, Libby Birch will write her name in the AFLW history books.

As she runs out on to Casey Fields for Melbourne’s Round 10 clash, she will become the first Victorian to reach 50 games.

The milestone is reflective of Birch’s incredible contribution to the competition, having played in every match she’s been available for since its inception.

The defender started her career as a rookie at the Western Bulldogs, coming across from elite-level netball to give herself the opportunity to develop in a new code.

Birch made her AFLW debut in 2017 during the league’s inaugural round and went on to play 22 games for the Bulldogs, achieving the ultimate success in their 2018 premiership.

In 2020, she made the move to Melbourne and instantly became a stalwart of the team’s backline, her efforts quickly recognised with All Australian honours and the club’s Trademark Player Award.

Now in her third year at the club, Birch is a part of the Demons’ leadership group and is a significant contributor to the club both on and off the field.

In the lead up to the milestone, Birch has been praised by her fellow teammates as they prepare to celebrate her for the player and person she is.

Captain Daisy Pearce, who originally encouraged her to make the move across to football, penned a message to Birch on Friday via a heartfelt Instagram post.

“You’re the most devoted teammate and friend,” Pearce wrote in her post to Birch.

“I’m so privileged to have watched you go about your business, always chasing growth and improvement and am so grateful for your friendship over the years.

“50 games may not sound like much to the casual footy fan, but they’re hard to come by in AFLW, so to be one of the first to get there, not missing a game in six seasons, is a massive achievement.”

Reflecting on what will be a huge moment in her football career, Birch said her time at Melbourne has been a particularly important part of her 50 games.

“Being a part of the Dees has been a highlight of my career so far and the team around me is amazing,” Birch told Melbourne Media.

“I just love playing with this group.

“It’s been a long journey; it’s been six years and playing 50 consecutive games without missing anything with injury, has been tough on the body and mind.

“But it’s been enormous and I’m really excited to be out at Casey this weekend sharing it with my friends and family who have also been a massive part in it."

Tickets are still available for the Saturday night game as Melbourne prepares to take on Carlton at Casey Fields, with the first bounce scheduled for 7:10pm (AEDT).
