MELBOURNE will have a clearer picture on Tuesday about the injuries sustained by defenders Jared Rivers (ankle) and James Frawley (thigh) during Sunday's eight-point loss to the West Coast Eagles at Subiaco Oval.

But it appears both players won't be out of action for too long.

Rivers hurt his ankle when he fell heavily after running back into a pack for a mark. He left the ground on a stretcher and finished the day on crutches.

Both players had scans on Monday afternoon but Melbourne football operations manager Craig Notman said the full extent of the duo's injuries would not be known until Tuesday.

"The boys had scans today (Monday), but just having a chat to Andrew Daff, our doctor, he said, without the benefit of what's come from the scans, he thinks it'll be an ankle sprain [for Jared]," Notman told melbournefc.com.au.

"Obviously the scans will show the full extent of the injury, but he's (Daff) been pleased and a lot happier than how it's come up today (Monday), as opposed to what we were thinking yesterday (Sunday) after the game.

"Hopefully it won't see him out for all that long."

On Frawley, who left the field early in the match, Notman said: "We think it's a thigh strain [and not an adductor injury], so obviously the scans will show the full extent of the injury."

"It's not going to be something that keeps him out for too long."
