Todd Viney’s season assessment
Neville had a few injuries this year he broke his hand and hurt his shoulder, which required surgery. But he played some good games for us and we now need him to have a good run with his injury, so he can produce some consistent football. He can play in the midfield or up forward and we really like his hardness.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Neville produced some exciting passages of play. He was hard-at-it and won some really important contested ball. He was outnumbered on occasions, but worked hard throughout. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
Nev just ran out gas and ended up being substituted for Addam Maric. Mark Williams

VFL: Round 2 v Port Melbourne
Neville came back from the AFL and although he had a quiet third quarter, he was very good otherwise. He was another positive and was up-and-about. He’s fitter and more confident at this level and had a very good attitude. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 3 v North Ballarat
Neville was very good. He played in the midfield and got 28 disposals. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 4 - Bye

VFL: Round 5 v Frankston
Neville was a very good performer with 24 possessions, playing midfield. I thought his run and work-rate around the stoppages were great. He set us up and continued going really well. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows (emergency)/VFL: Round 6 v Northern Bullants
Neville was on standby at the MCG, as an emergency. He got to the ground with enough time. And after a slow first half, he lifted in the second. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 8 v North Melbourne
Nev’s aggression was good, particularly his physicality with his tackling - he had 12 tackles. We wanted Nev to be more involved in the play around the ground and have a greater influence with his ball use. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda
Nev was good. His involvement around the ground and spread away from stoppage was much better in this match. He continued to improve as a midfielder, but needed to involve himself in the game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton
Nev’s physicality was good again. He had six tackles. Nev needed to continue to work on his involvement in the game and his use of the ball. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 11 v Essendon
Neville was involved in the game much more this week. We saw his hardness yet again, but he also booted two goals and kicked the ball inside 50 to help set up other scoring opportunities. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 12 v Collingwood
Nev worked hard until he was injured early in the first quarter. He played on until he could no longer tolerate the pain. His aggression was good and he won some hard ball one-on-one contests. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 13 v Fremantle
Injured: hand

AFL: Round 14 v Richmond
Injured: hand

AFL: Round 15 v Western Bulldogs
Injured: hand

AFL: Round 16 - Bye
Injured: hand

VFL: Round 16 v Frankston
It was Neville’s first game with us in a fair while. He was up and about, had 20 possessions and took seven marks. We played him a bit on the ball, but more up forward. His pressure skills were outstanding, with 18 team acts. He had a very good day. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 17 - Bye

VFL: Round 18 v Geelong
Injured: shoulder

VFL: Round 19 v Sandringham
Neville made the same type of contribution as when he last played. He kicked three goals and provided great chemistry with his tackling and chasing. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 20 v Coburg Tigers
He was good. Neville had 21 touches and nine tackles, but played mainly as a midfielder. He tired a little late, because we had to keep him out there more than what we would normally. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 22 v Richmond (emergency)/VFL: Round 21 v Werribee Tigers
Nev was excellent. He had 28 touches, kicked two goals and laid five tackles. He spent time in the midfield and up forward. He found himself in excellent positions during transition and was smart with his work-rate. He made a big impact at stoppages as well. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 23 v Gold Coast Suns
After a slow start possession wise, Nev won some important balls, particularly in the third quarter. He caused many turnovers with his physicality and aggressive attack on the ball and the opposition. He finished the game strongly. Nev had six tackles in our forward half.  Mark Williams

AFL: Round 24 v Port Adelaide
Nev was in and out of the game. He did some really good things. His physicality was good. He kicked an important goal, and continued to provide great pressure coming out of our forward line. Mark Williams
