THE DEVELOPMENT of Melbourne’s entire playing list will be its main focus for the second half of the season, according to acting general manager of football, Josh Mahoney.

Mahoney said “a number of changes” will happen to the club’s football program, which he believes will help the progression of its players.

“The focus for the second half of the year will be development of all our players and with that in mind we will action a number of the items discussed in our recent mid season review,” he said.

“Development means a lot of things, watching individual tapes, doing skills out on the track, playing games in various positions and watching live football – we’re looking to enhance our development mindset in the remaining 11 weeks.

“That includes all of our 46 players, including [pre-listed player] Jesse Hogan and [international rookie] Maia Westrupp.”

Mahoney said one of the “action points” to emerge from the recent mid-season football department review was to reorganise its weekly timetable.

The Demons have also included a back to the future look, given they will now hold their main training session at 3 pm each week.

“One modification we have made is to our weekly schedule,” he said.

“By moving our main session to the afternoon, it allows the players to recover appropriately from an intense development session on a Tuesday morning. This development session has always been in the program and this change allows it to be completed at a higher intensity.”

The football department made these changes before the club replaced Mark Neeld with Neil Craig as its senior coach on Monday.

“This was something that was discussed in last week’s review, and it’s one of the changes we’ve implemented for this week and the rest of the year,” Mahoney said.
