MELBOURNE has announced that Jack Grimes and Nathan Jones will lead the Club as Co-Captains in 2014.

Grimes and Jones were revealed as captains at a press conference at the MCG on Wednesday.

The Club also announced the structure of the six man leadership group, comprising of two captains in Jack Grimes and Nathan Jones along with James Frawely, Jack Trengove, Colin Garland and Mitch Clark.

Jones elevation to the captaincy role comes after two stellar individual seasons in which he won back-to-back ‘Keith Bluey Truscott’ Best and Fairest Awards.

Jones was the Club’s vice captain for the past two seasons and was also made acting captain from Rounds 7 to 14 last year during Jack Grimes’ injury absence.

The 26 year old is now into his 8thseason at the Demons after being drafted with the 12th pick in the 2005 National Draft.

He has played 157 games since debuting in Round 17 of 2006 and has proven his reliability by missing only three games due to injury over this span.

Grimes, a lifelong Melbourne supporter will lead the club for the third year since being named co-captain in 2012.

His leadership capabilities were identified at young age being named captain of the Northern Knights in the U18 TAC Cup.  He was then selected as Melbourne’s co-captain at the age of 22 and handled a number off-field issues with poise during his first two years in the role that would have tested the most experienced campaigners in the AFL.

The Demons drafted Grimes with the 14thselection in the 2007 draft, a selection the Club obtained by trading former number 1 pick, Travis Johnstone, to Brisbane.

He has played 68 games since debuting in Round 22 of 2008 and looks set to make an impact in 2014 after enjoying an uninterrupted pre-season.

The process to select the leadership structure at the Club saw the entire playing group vote on who they wanted to represent them as leaders as part of the leadership group.

Once the leadership group was formed, Paul Roos in consultation with the coaches and CEO Peter Jackson, made the recommendation to the Board for Jones and Grimes to lead the Club in 2014.
