MELBOURNE vice-captain Sarah Lampard says there are a lot of learnings to take out of her sides four-point loss to North Melbourne on Sunday.

The Demons were gallant all day against the ladder-leaders at Casey Fields but fell just short of victory in a brutal contest.

Despite the disappointing result, Lampard said the coaches message remained positive post-game.

“It was kind of to not dwell too much on that game,” Lampard told Melbourne Media.

“There’s obviously areas that we can improve on, with inconsistency being one of them, but it’s kind of we’ll take the learnings out of that and take that into next week.”

The Kangaroos are proving to be the in-form side of the competition, but Lampard wasn’t satisfied with the honourable loss.

“We think at our best we can beat them so it’s disappointing and yeah it was close, but we ultimately want to get that four points,” she said.

Over the first three rounds of the season the Demons have dominated the contested side of the game, but in the first half on Sunday they failed to take advantage in the centre.

“I think we were inconsistent and they kind of got on top of us in something that’s our strength,” Lampard said.

“We really pride ourselves on that and want to be able to win that.”

After trailing by 10 points at the main break, the Demons came out strong after half time and managed to hit the front at the start of the final term.

Lampard said there was a key focus to play with that sense of freedom, which kept Melbourne in the game.

“It was kind of more of a risk and playing our type of offence – not just kicking it down the line and letting them intercept and kick it back, but change lanes and get it in our forward 50,” she said.

With just three games left in the 2019 season, every game becomes crucial from this point for the red and blue.

With plenty to take out of the clash with North Melbourne, the Demons will be heading to Sydney with some momentum in Round 5 to take on GWS.

“We’ll take some positives out of that game, but we’ll review it and move forward and hopefully play a bit better footy next week,” Lampard said.
