LIAM Hulett might’ve been a mad St Kilda supporter living in Seaford, but he couldn’t have been happier about the fact he went from a Saint to a Demon when he was drafted by Melbourne in last week’s NAB AFL Draft.

Hulett, who was selected at No.46 overall and claimed the last spot on Melbourne’s primary list, said it was “a dream come true” when his name was called out by the red and blue.

“It was pretty unreal. I’m pretty stoked to be here and I just can’t wait to really get started,” he told Dee TV.

“Draft night was pretty low key. I wasn’t actually expecting to get picked up and I was just hopeful at best. When my name got called out, it just erupted and it just went off and it’s unreal feeling.

“I’m just stoked it happened.”

Hulett said since arriving at Melbourne late last week, he already felt part of the club.

“I made the move up last Friday night with a host family and they’ve been really welcoming as well, so it’s been a pretty easy transition,” he said.

“You can already tell they’re a great club and a great bunch of boys.

“They’re so welcoming and it was just unreal – even just walking down to training with them.”

Hulett, a key position player, described himself as a “big marking aggressive forward, who likes to attack the ball with heaps of aggression”.

Although injuries hindered his 2015, his strong form in the under 16s helped keep him right in the thoughts of the Melbourne recruiting fraternity.

“I had a pretty good [under] 16s year. I didn’t really have any injuries up until my bottom age year with the Stingrays, so I was pretty lucky,” he said.

“Last pre-season training at the Dandenong Stingrays, I tore and ruptured ligaments in my ankle, which left me out for most of the year, but I got back and played two games for the Stingrays and a future’s game.

“I was happy in the end that I got to play some footy, which gave me a bit of confidence, so I’m over that now. It was tough at the time, but I’m just glad it’s over and it’s made me a better person.”

Hulett said he was rapt to chat to captain Nathan Jones, who also came to Melbourne via the Dandenong Stingrays.

“He (Jones) came and introduced himself and came down and watched training on Thursday and he was pretty happy,” he said.

“There are a few Rays boys down here, like Harmesy and Mitch White, so they’ve been really good to me.”
