Todd Viney’s season assessment
Jeremy was a really good find. He played some exciting footy as a forward and took some great marks. His foot skills inside 50 were great. Jeremy also played a bit further up the ground at times. He has a really good work rate.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Injured: ankle

VFL: Round 1 v Geelong
Injured: ankle

VFL reserves: Round 2 v Port Melbourne
Jeremy kicked two goals in his first match back after an ankle injury. He was lively, which was good. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 3 v North Ballarat
Jeremy played his first senior match for Casey. He had 14 possessions and kicked a really good goal in the first quarter. He should’ve kicked another, but he had good chemistry with the other forwards, so he showed some promise. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 4 - Bye

VFL: Round 5 v Frankston
Jeremy played his second game in the seniors, and I threw him back and forward a bit. He kicked a goal up forward and did some good defensive things down back. He was also good one-on-one and took some really nice marks - contested and aerial. He was also good on the ground. He looked a likely type. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 6 v Northern Bullants
Jeremy played forward and did well. He kicked a couple of goals and took some big marks. I thought he worked solidly, but he had a few areas to work on like his awareness on a couple of occasions, but that will improve. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 7 v Bendigo Bombers
Jeremy was our best player, I thought. He kicked three goals and took seven marks. He also had 19 touches and played mainly as a forward. He was deep and up the ground - he played the different roles well. Jeremy hit-up and gave us some goals, so it was a really good game. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda (emergency)

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton (emergency)/VFL: Round 9 v Williamstown
Jeremy was a good focal point. He took five marks and kicked a couple of goals. Jeremy also pushed up the ground a fair bit. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 11 v Essendon
It was a fantastic debut by Jeremy. He will benefit greatly from this game. He was involved in some excellent passages of play and hit the scoreboard. Jeremy brought great attributes to our team. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 12 v Collingwood
Howey’s work rate was fantastic. He took some strong marks and moved the ball on quickly. He also had four scoring involvements and defended with intent. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 13 v Fremantle
Once again, Jeremy was an excitement machine. His work rate was outstanding, as was his ability to take contested marks under pressure. He kicked two goals and helped set up several others. Given more opportunities, he will develop. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 14 v Richmond
Jeremy had a quieter game, and fumbled a little bit early. He still kicked an important goal and his work-rate was again a highlight. He continued to gain valuable experience just by being out on the ground. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 15 v Western Bulldogs
Jeremy continued to learn and gain valuable experience from each game. His work rate was good, as was his ball use. He wasn’t involved in the game as much as previous weeks, but still managed to kick two goals. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 16 - Bye

AFL: Round 17 v Port Adelaide
Jeremy got to play a quarter, and his involvement and work rate were terrific. He tackled well, and continued to learn from each game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 18 v Hawthorn
Jeremy had a good game. He had 14 possessions, and impacted with all of them. He finished with three goals and took some telling marks in general play. He continued to grow in confidence and experience with every game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 19 v Geelong Cats
Jeremy lacked opportunities and didn’t have an impact on the game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 20 v Carlton
Howie’s work-rate was good. He chased and his defensive skills were solid as always. He took some strong contested marks and moved the ball on quickly by hand and foot. He made a few decision errors later in the game, which resulted in Carlton turning the ball over. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 21 v West Coast Eagles
Jeremy attacked the ball in the air and took some outstanding contested marks. His defensive game was also very solid. He had 10 marks and kicked three goals. He had a very good game and was again close to our best player. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 22 v Richmond
Jeremy had a quiet game and didn’t involve himself enough in the play. He didn’t work hard enough to give himself opportunities to win the ball or make his defender defend. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 23 v Gold Coast Suns
He came on in the third quarter and provided a target. Jeremy worked hard, kicked two goals and had nine disposals. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 24 v Port Adelaide
Howey’s work rate was again a highlight. His versatility is a real asset to our team. He was very solid in the air - he used the ball really well and finished with a goal. Mark Williams
