The Casey Demons produced one of their most spirited performances of the season but were left to rue missed opportunities, falling just six points short against the Darebin Falcons at Preston City Oval in a fiercely contested, wind-affected clash. The side brought outstanding pressure throughout the afternoon, laying 36 more tackles than Darebin while also winning the clearance battle by nine.

With a strong breeze favouring one end of the ground, Darebin made the most of the conditions early to gain the ascendancy. The Falcons controlled territory in the opening quarter, but Casey responded impressively, lifting their intensity around the contest and beginning to win the ball back through relentless pressure.

The Demons carried that momentum into the second term, producing their best football of the first half. Their defensive pressure forced repeated turnovers, while their work around stoppages allowed them to generate more attacking opportunities. Casey's strong response saw them edge to a one-point lead by the main break.

Darebin again capitalised on the breeze in the third quarter, controlling field position and converting their opportunities to open up a 20-point advantage heading into the final term.

With the wind now at their backs, the Demons refused to give in. Casey produced an outstanding final quarter, playing some of their best football of the season as they locked the ball inside their forward half for long periods and repeatedly challenged the Falcons' defence. The pressure continued to build as the margin steadily narrowed, giving the Demons every chance of completing a remarkable comeback.

Unfortunately, with quarters played under the 20-minute flat timing format, Casey simply ran out of time. Despite dominating territory and creating numerous inside-50 entries in the closing stages, the final siren sounded before they could find the goal that would complete the comeback, with the Demons falling just six points short.

Shree Fairchild was one of Casey's standout performers, delivering an influential all-round display. She finished with two important goals to keep the Demons within striking distance, while also collecting 16 disposals, laying nine tackles and winning seven clearances in a dominant performance around the contest.

A move into the midfield proved a masterstroke for Zoe Mitchell, who enjoyed one of her best games of the season. Mitchell led all Casey players with 21 disposals and made her presence felt defensively with nine tackles, while her eight clearances were instrumental in helping the Demons gain the upper hand at stoppages.

Meg Macdonald continued her outstanding season with another tireless midfield performance. She gathered 19 disposals, laid 10 tackles and drove the ball forward with six inside 50s, while Tylah Burn again impressed with her toughness at the contest, finishing with 18 disposals, 11 tackles and three clearances.

In the ruck, Zahri Burn gave Casey a strong platform throughout the afternoon. Her 35 hitouts helped the Demons control stoppages and played a key role in one of the midfield group's strongest collective performances of the season.

Inside forward 50, Alice Robinson's relentless pressure was a constant headache for the Falcons' defenders. She laid a remarkable 11 tackles and repeatedly created opportunities through her second efforts. While she couldn't quite convert her chances, finishing with three behinds, her impact extended well beyond the scoreboard.

Rebecca Fitzpatrick produced one of the highlights of the afternoon with a superb long-range goal from just inside 50 metres, a finish that sparked the Demons' charge and lifted the side.

Down back, Lily Snow once again stood tall in defence. She recorded a game-high nine intercept possessions from her 12 disposals, reading the play superbly and repeatedly halting Darebin attacks. Snow was well supported by Delany Madigan, who continues to look increasingly settled in defence and played an important role in Casey's defensive structure.

It was an encouraging team performance, with contributors across every line of the ground. While the Demons ultimately fell just short on the scoreboard, the even contribution across the side and the willingness to compete until the final siren were clear positives to take from the afternoon. It was a determined and resilient display that showcased the group's willingness to compete for four quarters and provides plenty of confidence heading into the next challenge.
