A promising first half from the Casey Demons wasn't enough to secure the four points, with the Coburg Lions taking control after the main break to run away with the contest.

Casey started the game with plenty of energy, matching Coburg around the contest and moving the ball with purpose to take a narrow lead into half time. The Demons looked well placed at the main break, but a combination of injuries and reduced rotations made the task increasingly difficult in the second half.

Christian Salem made a successful return from injury and showed his class before being managed out of the game at half time as planned. The experienced defender gathered nine disposals, kicked a goal and laid three tackles, while his composure and ball use helped create several scoring opportunities, including setting up a superb snap from Tom Matthews.

Tom McDonald was also withdrawn at the main break after being named as the AFL emergency later in the afternoon, while Wardell Lual was forced from the game before half time with injury. With three players unavailable after the break, the Demons were left with limited rotations and were unable to halt Coburg's growing dominance around stoppages, allowing the Lions to gain ascendancy and take control of field position.

Matthews made a positive return after a period of management, finishing with two goals and five tackles while providing a strong presence inside forward 50 throughout the afternoon.

There were encouraging signs in defence, with Jed Adams and Lukas Cooke both making successful returns from injury. Cooke collected 23 disposals and 10 intercept possessions while consistently launching Casey's attacks from the back.

Adams was also impressive, reading the play well to take several important intercept marks and providing a composed defensive presence throughout the match.

It was also a memorable day for Jasper Russell, who made his well-earned VFL debut after strong form at local level. The young forward embraced the occasion, finishing with 10 disposals while applying relentless pressure and bringing plenty of energy inside Casey's forward line.

Riley Onley enjoyed one of his strongest performances at VFL level after spending increased time through the midfield. He finished with 21 disposals, seven tackles, three clearances and a goal, competing strongly around the contest and continuing to impact both offensively and defensively.

Luis D'Angelo was another standout through the middle, recording 25 disposals, six tackles and four clearances. His work rate and ability to win the ball helped keep Casey competitive throughout the afternoon despite the Lions' dominance after half time.

Max Mapley made an excellent start to the contest, taking several strong contested marks and kicking a goal to provide an early spark. He finished with 15 disposals in an encouraging performance.

Luker Kentfield continued his consistent form in front of goal, finishing with two majors and providing a reliable target inside 50.

Ricky Mentha gathered 20 disposals and became increasingly influential as he pushed further up the ground later in the game. While he was unable to capitalise on all of his opportunities in front of goal, finishing with three behinds, his ability to create chances and impact the contest remained important for the Demons.

Ethan Stanley also impressed on the wing, working tirelessly across the ground to finish with 20 disposals and a goal while providing valuable run and connection between defence and attack.

Although the result didn't fall Casey's way, there were encouraging signs with several players returning successfully from injury, a VFL debut for Jasper Russell and a number of strong individual performances. The Demons will now look to build on those positives as they prepare for next week's challenge.
