The Casey Demons were unable to get the job done against Port Melbourne, going down in a fiery contest at Casey Fields on Sunday morning.
From the outset, the Borough were able to move the ball with greater efficiency, generating repeat inside 50 entries and putting the Casey defence under constant pressure. While the Demons had their moments, they struggled to utilise their intercept game to launch attacking chains and create sustained forward opportunities.
It was a significant day for defender Meg Macdonald, who celebrated her 50th game for the Casey Demons. Macdonald marked the milestone with another determined performance, finishing with 15 disposals and six tackles.
Lily Snow continued her impressive season, collecting 17 disposals and 10 intercept possessions. Assisted by Chloe McDonald, Snow was once again influential in defence as Casey looked to cover the absence of the injured Kasey Phillips.
In the midfield, Tylah Burn produced one of her strongest performances of the season. Burn amassed 18 disposals, five clearances and a remarkable game-high 16 tackles, leading the way with her relentless pressure and determination around the contest.
Zahri Burn battled tirelessly in the ruck, finishing with 37 hitouts and playing an important role in Casey's midfield contests.
Up forward, Bianca Lyne looked dangerous whenever the Demons were able to move the ball inside 50 and also provided an important contest when rotating through the ruck. Rebecca Fitzpatrick was similarly threatening, presenting strongly and providing a target in attack.
A move to the backline proved effective for Delany Madigan, who adapted well to her defensive role. Madigan finished with 17 disposals and six intercept possessions, helping repel a number of Port Melbourne attacks.
While the result didn't fall Casey's way, the young Demons side continued to show resilience and fight throughout the contest. With another valuable learning experience under their belt, the group will take the lessons from Sunday's performance as they continue to develop and build towards stronger performances in the second half of the season.
