The Casey Demons returned to the winners list in style on Sunday, defeating Essendon by 32 points at Casey Fields in the second match of a memorable double-header.

Running out in a special Heritage Round guernsey, the Demons paid tribute to the club's rich history, with the jumper featuring elements from the era when the club was known as the Casey Scorpions. The occasion also celebrated the 30th anniversary of Casey's 1996 premiership side, with a number of club greats from that triumph in attendance.

It was a professional display from the Demons, who controlled much of the contest through their ability to win territory and generate repeat forward-half opportunities. While Essendon enjoyed brief periods of momentum throughout the afternoon, Casey consistently found a response, preventing the Bombers from building any sustained pressure and maintaining control of the game.

The Demons won the inside 50 count and were rewarded for their attacking intent, creating plenty of scoring opportunities while also remaining organised behind the ball.

Matthew Jefferson was the standout performer in the opening half, producing a dominant display that set the tone for the afternoon. The key forward booted five goals before the main break, taking a series of strong marks and making the most of his opportunities in front of goal. With the game well in hand, Jefferson's afternoon was managed early, but his impact had already proven decisive.

Jack Henderson was outstanding through the midfield and finished as Casey's leading ball-winner with 31 disposals. Henderson's influence extended well beyond his possession tally, recording nine clearances, 10 score involvements and a goal in a complete all-round performance. His ability to win contested ball and then drive the Demons forward was a major factor in the victory.

Casey-listed midfielder Luis D'Angelo continued his impressive season with another strong display. D'Angelo gathered 29 disposals and hit the scoreboard himself, providing plenty of drive around the contest and linking the midfield with the forwards.

Making his first appearance for Casey, Changkuoth Jiath looked right at home across half-back. The defender finished with 25 disposals at an outstanding 92 per cent efficiency, showing his composure with ball in hand and helping launch numerous attacking chains from defence.

Tom McDonald once again demonstrated his class at VFL level. The experienced defender was a calming presence in the backline, collecting 22 disposals and taking nine marks as he repeatedly intercepted Essendon's forward entries and provided leadership behind the ball.

Kalani White showcased his exciting aerial ability, flying at almost every contest he entered. The young forward took three contested marks and finished with two goals, making his presence felt throughout the day and providing another dangerous target inside 50.

Latrelle Pickett added energy and creativity in attack, gathering 18 disposals, kicking a goal and setting up several others. His connection with Jefferson proved particularly dangerous, with the pair combining effectively to create scoring opportunities.

In the ruck, Max Heath battled against a competitive Essendon opponent. Heath recorded 12 disposals, four clearances and 16 hitouts before also having his workload managed later in the contest. His physical presence around stoppages helped Casey gain first use of the ball throughout key periods of the game.

The victory moves the Demons to five wins for the season and keeps them firmly within striking distance of the top 10 as the race for finals positions begins to heat up.

While the season has featured its share of highs and lows, Sunday's performance was another reminder of the side's potential when it puts together a complete four-quarter effort. With the competition now beyond the halfway mark, Casey will look to build momentum and string together consecutive wins for the first time in several weeks.

The challenge won't get any easier, however, with the Demons now turning their attention to a crucial away clash against Williamstown. The Seagulls currently sit seventh on the VFL ladder, making next week's encounter another important opportunity for Casey to close the gap on the teams occupying finals positions.
