The Casey Demons are back on the winners list, overcoming Footscray in an entertaining contest at Casey Fields on Sunday afternoon.
It was a see-sawing affair with momentum swinging dramatically throughout the day. Casey burst out of the blocks early, playing with speed and confidence as they piled on scoreboard pressure to open up a 58-point lead midway through the second quarter. Their ball movement and ability to capitalise on turnover proved damaging, with the Dees looking in complete control.
But as expected from the reigning premiers, Footscray responded. The Bulldogs slowly worked their way back into the contest, lifting their intensity around stoppage and beginning to gain territory. Casey’s defence was tested heavily through the second half as the Dogs continued to chip away at the margin.
The most dangerous period came at the beginning of the final quarter when Footscray closed to within nine points, threatening to steal the momentum entirely. Despite the pressure and rapid shift in the game, the Demons remained composed in the crucial moments.
Luker Kentfield stood tall when the game was on the line, clunking several strong marks and providing a reliable target going inside 50. He finished with four goals and nine marks.
Tom McDonald was equally important in stabilising the side during the final term. Time and time again he intercepted Footscray attacks with crucial marks behind the ball, while also helping launch Casey back into offence. Continuing his outstanding run of form, McDonald recorded 28 disposals and nine marks, combining strongly with Xavier Taylor as the key pillars in defence.
The victory was a significant reward for both the playing group and coaching staff after a challenging month with an undermanned side. The return of key talent like Andy Moniz-Wakefield and Jake Melksham added important class and composure, with both players playing pivotal roles in the win.
Moniz-Wakefield was awarded the special best-on-ground honour presented by coach Rhett McLennan for Sir Doug Nicholls Round.
He produced a brilliant all-round performance, impacting both through the midfield and inside forward 50. Having spent his recent games across half-back, Moniz-Wakefield looked right at home in a more attacking role, the position he was originally drafted to play. His ability to cover the ground and influence the contest in multiple phases was on full display as he amassed 32 disposals, three goals, 10 marks, seven tackles and five clearances.
Melksham also made an immediate impact in his return, finishing with four goals in a commanding display up forward. His experience and leadership were evident throughout the afternoon, particularly when the Bulldogs surged late. Whether presenting strongly inside 50 or pushing higher up the ground to help link passages together, Melksham provided a steadying presence for the younger group around him.
Casey’s performance showcased the brand of football the side is capable of producing when their system and pressure game clicks into gear. Their ability to move the ball with speed, while also defending strongly behind the ball, highlighted why the group can match it with the competition’s top sides when they are at their best.
Jack Henderson finished with 27 disposals and two goals while battling hard in the midfield despite the Dog's ruckmen getting on top across the match. Ricky Mentha was also prolific across half-back, collecting 32 disposals as he continued his impressive run of recent performances and ability to generate drive from defence.
Casey-listed players Miller Bergman, Jarrod Gatt and Luamon Lual all played important roles across the afternoon, contributing strongly in their respective positions. Late inclusion Louis Hodder also made his mark in the last quarter, kicking the final two goals of the game to help seal the result.
Ultimately, it was an all-round team performance that will give the Demons plenty of confidence moving forward. After a difficult stretch of matches, Casey showed resilience, composure and an ability to respond when challenged. They will now look to carry that momentum into Round 10 when they host the 2nd placed GWS Giants at Casey Fields.
