It was a tale of two halves for the Casey Demons, who fell short against an in-form Swans outfit by 17 points.
The young Dees were slow out of the blocks, with the margin blowing out to 49 points midway through the second quarter.
But what followed was a spirited response. Casey lifted after the main break to outscore the Swans in the second half, playing the game on their terms for extended periods. While the comeback ultimately fell short, there was plenty to take from the way they finished.
Tom McDonald led the way in defence with a commanding performance, doing a strong job on in-form forward Hayden McLean while still finding plenty of the footy himself. McDonald finished with 27 disposals, including 10 intercept possessions, and clunked 11 marks in a display that combined lockdown defence with attacking drive.
Alongside him, Jed Adams produced one of his most complete games at VFL level this season. The key defender collected 18 disposals, nine of those intercepts, and took seven marks, consistently competing in the air and halting the Swans’ forward momentum.
As a unit, Casey’s backline showed strong cohesion, particularly after the early stages, working together to transition the ball. Andy Moniz-Wakefield was influential across half-back with 25 disposals and seven marks, while co-captain Riley Bonner was prolific, racking up 36 touches, 11 marks and 9 inside 50s. Both provided important balance, contributing defensively while also helping launch attacking chains.
There was also a positive milestone for Jake Bowey, who successfully worked his way through a full game, after playing only a half the week prior. He finished with 21 disposals and showed encouraging signs, with several composed moments highlighting his ability to impact both defensively and with ball in hand.
Up forward, Tom Matthews provided plenty of spark, producing a highlight-reel performance in blustery conditions and kicking three goals. The lively small forward found ways to impact, finishing truly on multiple occasions with some classy, difficult goals. His energy and creativity around goal continue to stand out, building on what has been a strong run of form.
Luker Kentfield delivered one of the moments of the day, soaring high on the wing to take a spectacular mark that brought plenty of excitement. He backed it up with a solid overall performance, finishing with two goals and providing a strong presence ahead of the ball.
Through the midfield, Casey-listed player Ethan Stanley produced his best outing in the red and blue, stepping up in an important role. He finished with 20 disposals, eight inside 50s and two goals. He drove the ball forward and provide a valuable connection between midfield and attack. His influence was particularly important given the Swans’ advantage in the ruck, as he worked hard at ground level to help balance the contest.
There were also encouraging signs from debutants Miller Bergman and Tahj Delarue. Bergman impressed in his first game back from an ACL injury, showing composure to gather 19 disposals, while De La Rue made his presence felt with relentless pressure, highlighted by several strong chase-down tackles. Both showed promising glimpses in their first appearances and will take plenty of confidence from the outing.
The Dees will look to carry the intensity they brought in the second half into their next clash with the Blues, who come in red-hot on a three-game winning streak.
