It was with much sadness that all involved with the Melbourne Football Club and the MFC Past and Present Players’ and Officials’ Association heard of the recent passing of Peter Smith.

Peter was the son of legendary Melbourne coach, Norm Smith. He grew up surrounded by the game and went on to play for both Melbourne and Carlton, as well as Port Melbourne and Coburg in the VFA, where he was a significant contributor.

Hailing from Melbourne Grammar, Peter Smith had a reputation as a skilled goalkicker. Wearing No. 4 as his father had before him, he played 23 games for Melbourne across 1966 and 1967, before heading to the Barassi-led Carlton to play a further 15 games between 1968 and 1970.

Upon hanging up his playing boots, Smith went on to serve as a runner at Melbourne during Ron Barassi’s coaching reign, as he had during his North Melbourne tenure.

We offer our most sincere condolences to Peter’s daughters, Samantha and Felicity, as well as his wider family, former teammates and friends. He will forever be remembered as a special part of the red and blue family.

Peter Smith’s funeral will be held in the Cordell Chapel, Fawkner Memorial Park, 1187 Sydney Road, Fawkner on Friday, 10 April 2026, starting at 11.30 am. The service will also be webcast live on the Greater Metropolitan Cemetery Trusts website, Fawkner Cemetery.
