STEVEN King says Melbourne’s Round 1 win has provided belief in the club’s new direction, with the Demons embracing an evolving style of play under their new coach.
Speaking following his first win at the helm, King described the result as a mix of excitement, pride and relief.
“There’s been a lot of build-up over the summer, so it was great to get out there and put it on show,” he said.
“While it wasn’t perfect at times, the most pleasing part was seeing the changes we’ve been working on start to come through.
Van Rooyen rewarded
Young forward Jacob van Rooyen’s standout performance was a major highlight, with King praising the work that led to his six-goal outing.
“It’s a reward for the work he’s done,” King said.
“What he did in the off-season away from the club, his preparation, his athleticism, it was evident from day one of pre-season.
“It’s great to see him get that reward early.”
Captain leads the way
Max Gawn’s leadership was on full display, with the skipper stepping up late in the game to help drive his side over the line.
“He put himself forward to play the whole last quarter,” King said.
“That tells you everything about his preparation, his competitiveness and his love for the club.
“That’s the standard.”
Pickett magic on display
There were exciting signs from the Pickett connection, with King embracing the unpredictability the duo brings.
“They’ll do things at times that you don’t think are possible,” he said.
“That’s the magic, and that’s what brings people through the gates.”
Eyes on Fremantle
The Demons now turn their attention to a trip west to face Fremantle, with King viewing the clash as an another early opportunity to test his side.
“I see opportunity,” he said.
“We’ll head over there as underdogs again, that’s fine.
Good teams win on the road, and that’s our challenge this week.”
