The second practice match of the preseason saw Casey take on Richmond’s VFL side at Casey Fields on Saturday morning.

Conditions were warm early, providing a solid hit-out for both sides as preparations continue to build toward Round 1.

A number of players were given an opportunity to get valuable minutes into their legs, with eight AFL-listed Demons featuring: Max Heath, Jake Melksham, Xavier Taylor, Thomas Matthews, Jed Adams, Oscar Berry, Ricky Mentha Jnr and Riley Onley. The mix of experience and developing talent added plenty of energy around the contest and provided a good look at different combinations across the ground.

There were several strong individual performances across the ground, with Max Heath particularly influential. Dominant in the ruck, Heath was strong around stoppages and provided a threat aerially and inside 50. Pushing forward, he made his presence felt on the scoreboard, registering the first two shots on goal for Casey and converting one to get the side underway.

Tom Matthews was lively, applying pressure through both the midfield and forward line. His work rate and intensity stood out, and he was rewarded with a goal for his efforts. Melbourne’s first draft pick last year, Xavier Taylor, also showed his class across half back, using the ball well and providing composure and drive out of defence.

Among the VFL-listed players, Nate Pipicelli was the most productive in front of goal, finishing with two majors to lead the way for Casey. One of the highlights of the afternoon belonged to Sam Hoghton, who thrilled those in attendance with a spectacular mark, rising high above his opponent to complete an eye-catching grab.

The contest remained tight and competitive through the first half, with neither side able to create significant separation on the scoreboard. However, after the main break, Richmond lifted their pressure around the ball and began to control territory. Their ability to sustain repeat efforts and capitalise on turnover opportunities saw them edge ahead and eventually run over the top of the Dees.

Several new Casey-listed players were also able to notch another game in the red and blue, continuing to build cohesion within the group. With a fresh list and new faces integrating into the system, finding connection and consistency across all lines remains a key focus as the season approaches.

There were plenty of learnings to take from the hit-out, particularly with spots in the Round 1 side up for grabs. Competition for selection remains strong ahead of the season opener against last year’s VFL premiers, the Footscray Bulldogs, on Saturday March 21, providing added motivation as the group sharpens its preparations.

As the preseason continues, Casey will take on the Box Hill Hawks next Saturday, March 7, looking to gain further valuable match practice and continue building momentum ahead of Round 1.
