MELBOURNE Football Club is thrilled to announce that Max Gawn and Jack Viney have been selected to lead the AFL team in 2026.

Gawn, who was first named as captain in 2020, will once again be supported by Jack Viney in the role of vice-captain, marking the seventh year that the pair will take the reins together.

AFL Senior Coach, Steven King, announced the news to the playing group at a meeting this morning.

“It’s no surprise that Max will be the captain and leader of our club again this year, supported by Jack,” King said.

“From afar, the way that you’ve both supported this club is incredible. This was never in question that you would be the leaders of this club.

“We know how much this place means to you guys, with your actions on-field but especially off-field.”

The veteran ruckman is one of the most decorated in AFL history, having been selected for the All-Australian side an astounding eight times.

The 34-year-old is a three-time winner of the Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Trophy, most recently in 2025, which is reflective of his continuous growth and drive to improve over his 247 games.

Viney has held leadership positions at the club since 2017, an honour given in recognition of the midfielder’s grit, determination, and continuously held standards of excellence.

He is highly regarded by coaches and teammates alike for his deep connection and loyalty to the club.

Alongside Gawn and Viney will be a select group of emerging and experienced leaders who will support the pair and their vision for the club in 2026.
