Following a year of significant change, Melbourne Football Club has announced an operating loss of $200,000 for the 2025 financial year.
The loss follows four years of consecutive operating profits for the club.
Despite the overarching results, the club’s Balance Sheet remains strong, with net assets of $24.4m. This is underpinned by the club’s Future Fund of $23.7m, as well as combined cash and financial assets of $6.9m.
It is important to note that the club’s statutory result has been materially impacted by abnormal items in 2025, most significantly the costs relating to the transition of key football department personnel, resulting in a statutory loss for the year of $4.5m. These costs, which total $3.9m, include payments to the club’s former Senior Coach, Simon Goodwin and future payments to be made to Clayton Oliver.
Melbourne CEO Paul Guerra said:
“On behalf of the entire football club, I’d firstly like to thank each and every one of our 58,890 dedicated Demons who signed up as members in 2025. Your ongoing support ensures the Melbourne Football Club remains financially strong.
“Despite announcing a minor operating loss in 2025, members should rest assured that the club remains in a healthy financial position. The Future Fund ensures we are well placed to continue to innovate as a club and support our football programs to ultimately deliver on-field success.
“2025 was no doubt a challenging season for our men’s football program, however the club has been through a period of significant change over recent months and the addition of key personnel, including new AFL Senior Coach Steven King, has bought with it a renewed sense of excitement and optimism.
“Members should take confidence that the abnormal costs incurred in the transition of key football department personnel do not impact the club’s overarching financial strength. While, the club had to make some incredibly difficult decisions throughout 2025, these decisions were made with the future of the club at heart.
“I’d also like to thank our loyal club partners whose ongoing investment continues to ensure we can grow and innovate, while safeguarding our financial future.
“As a football club we are incredibly clear on where we are heading, and we are excited to embark on this next chapter with our passionate members and supporters.
“Once again, thank you to all our members and partners for their ongoing loyalty. Hopefully we can enjoy an exciting weekend ahead as our AFLW program embarks on its fourth preliminary final berth.”
