On the eve of the 10th AFLW season, a new AFLW documentary, Forged in Red & Blue, will share the previously unseen stories that three remarkable women have taken to arrive in their current roles at Melbourne Football Club.
Starring Melbourne AFLW Senior Assistant Coach Shae Sloane, Captain Kate Hore, and new draftee Molly O’Hehir, the documentary highlights not only the individual journeys, but also the changes that have occurred in the AFLW since the inaugural season of 2017.
Sloane’s pathway through her football career was a tumultuous one, with three consecutive ACL injuries derailing her aspirations of a long playing career.
The much-loved Demon reflects on the ups and downs, and how she made the most of her opportunities on the sidelines, which kickstarted a passion for coaching.
Entering her ninth season at the top level, Hore looks back on an incredible journey to date.
The Demons captain was drafted in 2018 and quickly became one of the most trusted and reliable players in the AFLW competition. She has since achieved All-Australian honours on three occasions, AFLPA Captain of the Year, and three consecutive best and fairest trophies, alongside a premiership medallion.
Hore recounts the key moments that got her to where she is today, and just how much the competition has grown over the past decade.
For O’Hehir, it’s just the beginning.
The documentary follows how the Demons landed on the Western Australian product, who was drafted with pick number 3 in the 2024 AFLW Draft, and the wave of emotion that followed with the realisation of a childhood dream.
O’Hehir has impressed since arriving at Melbourne, with her athleticism, strength and footy IQ a standout. The 19-year-old's hard work has paid off, announced this week that she will make her debut in Melbourne’s Round 1 clash against the Western Bulldogs.
Alongside sharing the pathways that individuals might take to professional football, the documentary also seeks to shine a light on the recruitment process and the club’s strategy that will catapult Melbourne back to the top.
The Demons take on the Bulldogs under the lights on Saturday 16 August at 7.35pm. The pre-show starts at 7pm, so arrive early to catch all the action.
