OLIVIA Purcell, Melbourne’s unyielding midfielder, has re-signed with Melbourne until at least 2027.

The 24-year-old has already established herself as one of the league’s toughest competitors, having played 54 games across her seven seasons.

In season 2024, despite enduring a painful facial injury, she courageously returned to the field and played out the season in an eye-catching facial mask.

Melbourne’s Head of AFLW, Marcus Wagner, praised Purcell’s tenacity and resilience.

“Liv is a highly professional player, who drives elite competitive standards across our program,” Wagner said.

“Our entire club saw how she conducted herself with such perseverance last season, despite an injury that could have really set her back. She’s such a positive person who takes those disappointments in her stride, but also has an unquenching thirst for success.”

Purcell articulated her desire to remain at Melbourne for the upcoming season.

“I’m really happy, I’ve been here for a few years now but I’m looking forward to this year and the next couple of years,” Purcell said.

“It’s been a really good last few years, and at the end of your contract it’s always great to reflect and think about your journey.

“A significant point for me was last year when I had my injury, the club was so supportive  and handled that really well. The staff and players were super supportive and it made this year and signing on so much easier.”

Purcell shared her hopes for the season ahead and the ambitions for the group.

“It will be good to get a good preseason in and hopefully a full season of footy. I feel like as a team we’re quite competitive and we expect a lot from each other, so finals will be on our minds.”

Averaging 21 touches each game, Purcell’s impact in the midfield can’t be overstated, with the All-Australian player able to turn a game off her own boot.

The exciting news of her re-signing comes following the recent announcement of the AFLW fixture, which will see the Demons take on the Doggies at Whitten Oval on Saturday 16 August.
