SENIOR Coach Simon Goodwin addressed the media ahead of Melbourne’s Round 12 clash, sharing key updates on Jack Viney’s availability, preparations for Alice Springs, and the club’s growing momentum.

Viney on track to return

Jack Viney is a chance to return this week after progressing through the AFL’s concussion protocols.

“If Jack gets through everything, he’ll play,” Goodwin said.

“It’s taken a little longer than usual, but everything we’ve seen so far suggests he’s on track to play. That’s exciting for the club.”

“He’s our vice-captain and an incredibly important part of our team, so we’re hopeful he can return.”

Setback for Charlie Spargo

Goodwin expressed disappointment for Charlie Spargo, who suffered a fractured scapula following his recent return to the senior side.

“It’s really disappointing for Charlie. He’s worked incredibly hard to get back from his Achilles injury and had been contributing really strongly over the past month or so,” he said.

“He’s going to be missed, but we will get him back at the right time of the year.”

Connection to Alice Springs

Melbourne will travel to Alice Springs this weekend, and Goodwin is excited to continue an incredible tradition that’s been running since 2014.

“We love getting out there. Our club has embraced the community for a long time, and we’ve built some strong connections through local programs,” Goodwin said.

“We just want to go out there and showcase our game.”

Gawn leading by example

At 33 years old, Max Gawn continues to set the standard across the competition.

“He’s the master of his craft. He’s worked for 13 years on being a great ruckman.”

“He looks after himself really well and is playing to a really high level.”

The value of experience

Goodwin acknowledged the growing value of veteran players across the AFL.

“Players in their 30s are still having a huge impact - guys like Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Max (Gawn), and Jake Melksham are playing exceptional footy,” he said.

“It’s become more of an individual thing now. That type of experience you just can’t buy.”

Salem in strong form

Goodwin praised Christian Salem’s return to form, following several interrupted seasons.

“This is the best footy he’s played in the last three years,” he said.

“He’s worked hard to get his body right and has added real value both in defence and through the midfield. Having a player like Salem, with the ball use he provides, is something we’ve been missing.”

Preparing for the Saints

Melbourne is expecting a tough contest against Ross Lyon’s St. Kilda side.

“Ross-coached teams are always difficult to play against. They defend high, are strong in the contest and bring great effort,” Goodwin said.

“We’ll prepare accordingly, as our focus is also on continuing to improve our own game.”
