Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin says the win over Fremantle offered glimpses of what the team has been building towards, but consistency remains the goal.
“That’s exactly what you’re after—small gains where you can say, ‘Yeah, that’s what we’re about’.
“We’re not a perfect product yet, there’s still work to do. But I think our supporters would’ve seen some of the things we’ve been building. Hopefully, we see more of that moving forward.”
Defensive Focus Remains Front and Centre
While Melbourne’s ball movement has evolved this season, Goodwin stressed that defence remains the top priority.
“Our defence hasn’t been at the level we’re capable of. Our focus is really on getting back to that.
“The players’ buy-in (to defence) was high last week, but Fremantle still kicked 97 points—so we know there’s still plenty of work to do.”
Defence Unlocks Attacking Power
Goodwin highlighted the connection between team defence and offensive power.
“You can’t attack unless you’ve got the ball—and to get the ball, you have to win it back.
“We’ve lacked pressure and haven’t been hard to play against. That’s not who we are. Our identity has always been built on our competitiveness and defensive consistency.”
May Tracking Well, McVee in the Mix
There was positive news on the injury front, with Steven May to train and potentially return alongside Judd McVee.
“He was very close last week—it was just a slight groin niggle. He’s still got a few things to get through, but we’re confident in his progression.
“We’re hopeful May and Judd McVee are back this week, which brings strength and experience to the group.”
Finding The Midfield Balance
Goodwin spoke on exploring different midfield combinations and maximising the strengths of these players.
“We’re building a system that balances our talent across the ground. Jack Viney was excellent last weekend, and we’ll continue to assess that mix each week.”
Viney’s Leadership Through Preparation
Jack Viney’s preparation stood out last week, with Goodwin praising his attention to detail.
“He spent a long-time post-session reviewing vision. That’s what great players do—and Jack leads in that space.”
Petracca's Midfield Craft
Christian Petracca continues to evolve his game, with Goodwin encouraged by his recent form.
“He’s been really impressive. We’ve used him a bit more to support our forwards, but his midfield craft and clearance work are building. He’ll only get better.”
On Forward Selection Calls
Goodwin praised the response of Bailey Fritsch and Jacob Van Rooyen after they featured in the VFL side last weekend.
“Their attitude was outstanding. It wasn’t about goals—it was about applying pressure and doing the right things without the ball.
“We’ll use the VFL to help guys find form. It doesn’t mean they’re not valued. They just need to be really clear on expectations.”
On the privilege of playing on ANZAC Day Eve
Goodwin acknowledged the importance of the ANZAC Day Eve clash.
“It’s a huge occasion. It’s a chance to educate, reflect, and pay our respects. Our supporters love this game—we’re expecting a big crowd on Thursday night.”
On Facing Richmond and Adem Yze
Goodwin praised the Tigers and their new coach, Adem Yze, ahead of Thursday night’s clash.
“They’re playing great footy—quick, structured, hard to score against.
“Yze’s done an incredible job. He’s a high-quality coach and person, and really clear on where he wants to take them.”
