ALL involved with the Melbourne Football Club were saddened to hear of the passing last week of Bob Turner. Bob, who played 22 games with the Demons between 1957 and 1961, wearing No. 10 throughout, was a much loved member of the red and blue community.
After Melbourne, Bob went on to play with Oakleigh, and was part of a VFA representative side when Victoria took on Tasmania in 1964.
As a teacher, Bob had to deal with transfers, and so it was that he made it to Warragul, where he both taught at the technical school and played football for Warragul, eventually expanding his role to serve the team as playing coach.
Along the way, Bob maintained his connections with his former teammates. Ron Barassi was best man at his wedding, and Frank ‘Bluey’ Adams was a close friend as well.
One of Bob’s greatest delights was seeing Melbourne win the 2021 premiership. While business demands often called – Bob and wife Jacquey ran the Warragul branch of Gippsland Travel after Bob left teaching – whenever he could, Bob would make it to match day functions. The first home game of 2022 was one of those occasions, full of atmosphere and red and blue celebrations, and Bob was there, delighted to soak it all up.
Bob will forever be a special part of the Demon family. We offer our most sincere condolences to his wife Jacquey, his children Anthony and Caroline and their families, his friends and former teammates.
