The Melbourne Football Club is pleased to announce that Andrew McQualter has joined the club’s AFL coaching panel for the 2024 season.

McQualter arrives at Melbourne with a wealth of coaching experience, having spent the past 10 years in various roles at Richmond.

He joined the Tigers ahead of the 2014 season, working in a development coaching role under Mark Williams before moving into a line-coaching position in 2017, where he was part of significant premiership success.

The 37-year-old’s most recent responsibilities came in the form of interim senior coach, where he took the reins for 13 matches halfway through last season.

General Manager of AFL Performance Alan Richardson said McQualter’s experience would be of great benefit to the red and blue.

“We are thrilled to have Andrew join the club in an assistant coaching capacity,” Richardson said.

“Andrew’s coaching experience over the past decade speaks for itself. From being part of three premierships, to his recent tenure as interim coach; we have no doubt his exposure to various roles and responsibilities will be a great asset to the club.

“We look forward to welcoming Andrew as we turn our attention to the 2024 season.”

Prior to coaching, McQualter served an eight-year playing career, predominantly at St Kilda after being selected with pick No.17 in the 2004 AFL Draft.

He went on to play 89 matches as a Saint, 10 of which were finals, before joining the Gold Coast SUNS in late 2011. He played a further five games throughout 2012, switching to coaching the following year.

McQualter’s strengths as a player have translated to his coaching style, with his leadership and strong communication skills a standout.

McQualter joins the Demons following the departure of Adem Yze, who was appointed the new senior coach of Richmond last month.
