MELBOURNE has announced the largest cohort of re-signings in its AFLW history, with 28 players staying loyal to the red and blue ahead of the upcoming season.

This marks a momentous moment for the club, all players choosing to turn their back on the AFLW Sign and Trade Period and the newly introduced Priority Signing Period (PSP).

The mammoth re-signing sees the club retain 20 of the club’s 21 inaugural premiership players, the sole omission being retired premiership captain Daisy Pearce.

In addition to the premiership side, Melbourne has resecured the services of eight talented Demons in Gab Colvin, Eliza McNamara, Jordan Ivey, Charlotte Wilson, Rhi Watt, Georgia Gall, Georgia Campbell and Sammie Johnson.

AFLW List Manager Todd Patterson was thrilled to see the commitment from the group and praised the positive environment created by the players and football staff.

“As a club, we’ve been blown away by the commitment shown from the playing group, particularly during the Sign and Trade and PSP periods,” Patterson told Melbourne Media.

“It really is a testament to the culture that the coaches, led by Mick Stinear, the players and the staff have created, and we couldn’t be prouder.

“Every single member of the club has contributed to where we are today and helped shape the foundations of our football program, which we’re only looking to build on next season.

“We’re excited by this significant step and look forward to going to work later this year.”

This weekend, Melbourne’s AFLW side will celebrate their inaugural premiership, with the group acknowledged during the AFL side’s season-opener against the Western Bulldogs.

The players will take part in a lap of honour on the hallowed turf of the MCG at half time of the match. To be there to see the AFL action and celebrate the AFLW team, you can purchase tickets here.
