MELBOURNE’S season has come to a premature end at the hands of the Lions on Friday night.

And skipper Max Gawn extended an apology to the Demons’ faithful in the aftermath of the 13-point loss at the MCG.

“Sorry to all the members and supporters that turned out the last two weeks,” Gawn told Melbourne Media.

“It’s a pretty devastating couple of weeks for the football club.

“We really put ourselves in a good position post-Round 23 and we got outplayed.”

During the second term of a fierce Semi-Final clash, the Dees opened up a 26-point buffer, but they couldn’t get the job done after half-time.

“There’s four quarters of footy in a game of footy and you’re naive to think a team’s not going to come back or fire a shot at one point,” Gawn said.

“We still worked incredibly hard but when push came to shove and the pressure was right on, our fundamentals were just a little bit off and other teams were a little bit cleaner.

“It’s extremely disappointing – we want to make the MCG a fortress.

“We want to be able to play some good footy here in front of 60,000 tonight and 80,000 last week.

“We were unable to do it.

“There’s going to be a bitter taste unfortunately for me and [66,484] members and everyone here until we can get back day one [of pre-season].”

Brisbane piled on six goals to two in that third quarter, with the Demons unable to stem the flow.

“It’s one of the hardest things to stop in footy,” Gawn said.

“Once teams have momentum it’s incredibly hard to stop.

“They were able to kick goals late in both the second and the third which kept them in the game … which is extremely disappointing.

“There’s so many bitter tastes in my mouth, so many bitter thoughts about what actually happened in the last two weeks.

“We’ll go home and process it all and footy is one of those things where you’ve just got to come back next year and try to win it again.”

And while there were so many positives throughout 2022, it certainly feels like a missed opportunity for the red and blue.

“It’s disappointing, it really is,” Gawn said.

“We should’ve been able to capitalise on our momentum in both games to be able to win one of them.

“I’m sure I’m going to be able to take a positive [from the season] at some point, but right now, and most likely the next 12 weeks, it’s pretty negative.”
