AARON Davey had the chance to address the playing group when he joined the club in Maroochydore last Saturday, and he left the team inspired with his heart felt speech.

The former Melbourne star spent the day with the club, learning off Simon Goodwin and the coaching staff during the main training session on the Sunshine Coast.

But while Davey was there purely to learn, his impact on the group was profound.

“This footy club is a massive part of my life,” Davey said to the Demons players.

“I just started out as a rookie and worked hard.

“It’s just one of those things – what footy does to you.

“Unless you’re in this environment you can never get up and understand and talk about what a footy club means to someone.

“You spend a long time at a football club and it becomes like family and home - I’m Melbourne through and through.”

The 35-year-old had a prolific career in the red and blue, claiming the club’s best and fairest award in 2009 and playing finals footy from 2004 to 2006.

Davey’s still a passionate Melbourne supporter, tied to the club forever with a life membership, and sees a genuine chance at success in the near future.

“Boys all I’m going to say is just enjoy it, embrace it,” he said.

“There’s probably going to be expectations, as you know that comes with football, but I’m sure you guys are in a really good position now.

“It’s a special feeling at the moment. There’s some really good people around the club and that’s what every footy club is built on – good people.

“Make the most of your opportunities.

“I was very fortunate to last 10 years and some guys don’t get that opportunity, but you guys are in really good hands.”
