A CASEY Demons outfit full of AFL talent has taken out a 39-point victory in its practice match against Carlton.

The clash at IKON Park saw 15 Melbourne-listed players take to the field, helping the Dees get off to a fast start on Thursday afternoon.

Sam Weideman, who played just two quarters of the match, did his damage early, booting four of Casey’s eight first-half goals to help his side lead by 45 points at the main break.

While a slightly younger Demons side took to the park in the second half, allowing Carlton to get on top at the clearances and ultimately hit the scoreboard, the early damage had been done.

The Blues outscored Casey by six points after half-time, but the Demons’ spirit didn’t waiver.

With all five of Melbourne’s 2021 draftees taking to the field – Jacob van Rooyen, Blake Howes, Taj Woewodin, Judd McVee and Andy Moniz-Wakefield – there were plenty of positive signs for the red and blue.

Howes and van Rooyen, the Dees’ highest draft selections, opened the scoring on the day with majors in the first term, before McVee joined in on the action in the second.

After the break, Woewodin, and second-year player Fraser Rosman, converted from set shots to get the scoreboard ticking against the flow of play.

Daniel Turner, who was recruited to the club via last year’s mid-season draft, was pivotal in defence in the first half, before being managed later in the match.

Casey also benefited from some AFL experience against the Blues, with Majak Daw providing a contest in the ruck, Jake Melksham and Mitch Brown operating up forward, and former Saint Luke Dunstan racking up the touches in the centre.

The VFL side has two more practice matches ahead of Round 1, with a Friday night battle against Richmond scheduled in at Casey Fields next week.
